Mullers Famous Fried Cheese Café
First on our list of family favorites is Muller’s Famous Fried Cheese Café, located just off Main Street at 60 Chattahoochee Strasse in Helen, GA. Open seven days a week starting at 9 AM, Muller’s only closes on Thanksgiving and Christmas. While they serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner, we’re here to focus on what makes their breakfast special. Owned and operated by Zdenek and Michaela Muller, originally from Prague, Czech Republic, they bring authentic German and Czech cuisine right to the heart of Helen.
When we visited Muller’s as a family of four, we were excited to dive into the menu, with each of us trying something different from their range of German and Czech-inspired dishes. I went with the German Schnitzel breakfast, which came with two perfectly cooked eggs, crispy roasted potato wedges, and a choice between pork or chicken schnitzel. I chose the chicken, and it was tender, flavorful, and beautifully breaded, just what you’d hope for in an authentic schnitzel. My wife went for their oatmeal, which was warm, comforting, and exactly what she was looking for to start a relaxed morning in Helen.
Our kids ordered the classic Breakfast Sandwich and a stack of Muller’s famous pancakes. The sandwich came with scrambled eggs and crispy bacon between two slices of toast, while the pancakes, three fluffy, golden rounds were a big hit with just the right amount of syrup. As a treat, both kids enjoyed a chocolate milk special, the “Coffee Frappe” minus the coffee, topped with whipped cream and chocolate sprinkles. The drinks made breakfast feel extra special, turning our meal into a memorable family occasion.
We’d definitely return to Muller’s as a family. The food was delicious, and each dish had a homemade, authentic touch that made it stand out. The staff was incredibly friendly, adding to the welcoming atmosphere even on a busy morning when the place was bustling. Be aware that seating can be a bit challenging, so it’s worth getting there early, especially during weekends. A convenient surprise was the on-site, free parking for guests, a great bonus for a downtown Helen spot. All in all, Muller’s Famous Fried Cheese Café left a great impression on us and would be an easy choice for breakfast.
Hofer’s Bakery and Café
Next on our list is Hofer’s Bakery, located on Main Street at 8758 N. Main St. Helen, GA 30545. Hofer’s truly is both a Bakery and Café in one, each having different hours of operation. At the time of this writing the store hours are the following but any changes to their hours can be found on the home page of their website.
Bakery: Weekdays - Monday, Tuesday, and Friday from 8 am to 5 pm. Weekends - Saturday 8 am to 6 pm and Sunday 8 am to 5 pm.

This is a family favorite of ours and a must-visit for anyone in the area. Originally opened in 1973 by Horst and Gerda Hofer, who hailed from Schwabach, Germany, their second location in Helen followed 18 years later. Today, it’s lovingly run by their son Ralph, continuing the tradition of authentic German hospitality and cuisine.
If you plan to visit, we recommend arriving early, especially on weekends, as lines tend to form quickly. The café is popular for a reason! Free parking is available behind the building, but it fills up fast, so street parking may be your next best option.
From the moment you step inside, you’re greeted by the aroma of fresh-baked bread and pastries. The front of the store houses an incredible bakery and deli stocked with authentic German breads, pastries, and even cold cuts. For those in a rush, you can skip the café line and grab something delicious from the bakery counter.
On our most recent visit, we decided to sit down for the full café experience, and it did not disappoint. Their menu features both traditional breakfast dishes and unique German options. My personal favorite is Hofer’s Biscuits and German Gravy—a dish that I can’t recommend enough. For something more adventurous, the Bavarian Cold Cut Breakfast or the Pregel and Lox are standout choices. The latter is especially indulgent, with its combination of Scottish smoked salmon, cream cheese, onions, capers, and tomatoes atop a freshly baked bagel. No matter what you order, you’re in for a treat packed with authentic flavors and warm hospitality.
Hofer’s Bakery and Café is a place that truly captures the charm and authenticity of Helen. With its warm atmosphere, friendly staff, and menu filled with delicious German-inspired options, it’s easy to see why this spot remains a family favorite and to those visiting the area. Whether you’re stopping by for a quick pastry or settling in for a full breakfast, Hofer’s is a must-visit for any trip to Helen.

One of the absolute must-tries at Dottie's is their Cat Head Biscuits—named for their large, fluffy size, about as big as a cat’s head. These biscuits are perfectly golden on the outside, soft and buttery on the inside, and an ideal companion to their savory sausage gravy.
