A Guide to Trout Fishing in Helen, GA, and Surrounding Areas
If you’ve ever considered visiting the North Georgia Mountains for trout fishing, Helen, GA, is a must-visit destination. Not only is it perfect for fly fishing, but you also shouldn’t miss the charm of this quaint, German-inspired town. The Chattahoochee River runs directly through downtown and is known for its trout fishing. While trout fishing is abundant in Helen, GA, Smithgall Woods State Park is just outside the city. Here you can find a true fisherman’s paradise with Dukes Creek, well known for its fly fishing. And just north of Helen is Unicoi State Park which has Smith Creek, another popular spot for catching some incredible trout.
Smithgall Woods State Park – Dukes Creek
Helen sits at the foothills of the North Georgia Mountains and local streams are abundant. This area is known for its incredible beauty and on our recent visit we decided to take our fishing to Smithgall Woods State Park. Fishing in Dukes Creek is a catch and release only fishery, open from October through May each year but by reservation only. Spots are limited to Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. We recommend you call ahead a few weeks in advance as the spots fill quickly. During my visit this past March, I had an unforgettable experience. My guide and I traveled upstream from the visitor center about a half mile and caught several small rainbow trout. Although they were on the smaller side this year, the beauty of this stream with crystal clear waters was incredible. Several small waterfalls on this stream are great fishing stops as well as the bridge located just near the visitor center. My gracious guide and this environment made it an extraordinary trip.
When fishing in Dukes Creek, only artificial bait and barbless hooks are allowed. This supports their conservation efforts and protects the trout population. Smithgall Woods is a true anglers paradise and has a remarkable conservation success story. This property, once transformed by hydraulic gold mining in the 19th century, today this land is reclaimed and completely rejuvenated thanks to Charles Smithgall Jr., a conservationist. His legacy is felt throughout the park, offering visitors more than just fishing. There are 5 miles of hiking trails and 18 miles of road throughout the park allowing both hikers and bicyclists to explore the natural beauty of this area.
Helen Georgia – Chattahoochee River
Another great spot for trout fishing is the Chattahoochee River. Once the busy tourist tubing season ends in the fall, the river transforms into a peaceful fly-fishing option in the Helen portion of the river. The cooler months traditionally bring fewer visitors except during Octoberfest. The Chattahoochee is regularly stocked with rainbow and brown trout, weekly from April through July, then periodically until October which begins the season. This river is a great destination for both experienced and novice anglers. In addition to the seasonal fishing opportunities, Helen is home to the Annual Helen Trout Tournament, which draws anglers from all over. The 36th annual trout fishing tournament will take place in March, offering participants the chance to fish for specially tagged trout worth up to $1000. For more information on this upcoming tournament, visit the Helen Chamber here.
Unicoi State Park – Smith Creek
Just northeast of Helen, GA, Unicoi State Park offers another great fly fishing spot at Smith Creek. While the creek is a bit narrower, it still provides excellent opportunities for anglers. To fish here, stop by the lodge to sign in for the day. Smith Creek is catch-and-release only and flies with a single hook are required. The fishing area for anglers is south of the Unicoi Lake / Dam point.
If you're new to fly fishing, Unicoi Lodge offers an affordable introductory class that covers both land and water techniques. It’s a great way to learn the basics and start fishing in this beautiful area.
